Commuters must report illegal bus fare imposed by PMV operators here in Law too. No one is above the law

THE Independent Consumer and COMPETITION Commission (ICCC) has taken three public motor vehicle (PMV) operators to court for charging illegal fees.

The three operators in Port Moresby made their first appearance at the Waigani District Court yesterday for charging K1 from their passengers when the regulated figure was 80 toea per route.

Isaac Tai, John Puri and Michael Kewa were charged for charging illegal fees for PMVs, breaching the Price Regulation Act. Representing the trio in court was Jack Waso, the president for NCDC PMV Association.

Mr Waso claimed that the value of kina was low and the operators had to consider the price of fuel, vehicle parts, fortnights for the DRIVER and crew and loans obtained to start up the businesses. Outside court, Mr Waso elaborated to the Post Courier that the Motor VEHICLE INSURANCE Limited charged higher fees for the registration of PMVs as well.

It is understood that in 2007, ICCC regulated PMV fares in NCD to be at 80 toea. However, due to the increase in population it was the commuters who at times told PMV crews that they would be willing to pay K1 in order to get to their destinations on time. This was especially the working CLASS people and students who wanted to arrive on time at their destinations, especially in the mornings on weekdays.

The operators also claimed that they followed the requests of commuters by taking K1 because the routes that they took covered more than one bus stop.

They claimed that the passengers paid 30 or 40 toea for short distances instead of paying the ICCC regulated 80 toea for their services per route. The matter will return to court on May 14.
